Their story is also remembered for one of the most tragic moments in Korean entertainment history.
Lee Hyun-do: The Producer Behind the Sound
At the heart of DEUX was Lee Hyun-do, widely regarded as one of the most influential producers of the 1990s.
Drawing inspiration from American hip-hop, new jack swing, and contemporary R&B, he created a sound that felt fresh and modern to Korean audiences. Songs such as "Turn Around and Look at Me," "We Are," "Weak Man," and "Escape from the Cage" demonstrated that rap, rhythm, and dance music could become part of mainstream Korean pop.
Lee Hyun-do also helped popularize more rhythmically sophisticated Korean rap, showing how Korean lyrics could naturally fit hip-hop flows while remaining accessible to mainstream listeners.

Kim Sung-jae: A Fashion and Performance Icon
If Lee Hyun-do defined DEUX's musical identity, Kim Sung-jae became one of its most recognizable public faces.
His oversized denim, sportswear, goggles, headbands, and street-inspired fashion reflected trends emerging from American hip-hop while giving them a distinctly Korean identity. For many young fans in the early 1990s, his style was just as influential as the music itself.
His relaxed stage presence and natural charisma also helped shape a new image of the Korean male performer—one that emphasized individuality rather than traditional pop-star conventions.
A Career Cut Tragically Short
In 1995, DEUX decided to end the group while both members pursued separate careers. Lee Hyun-do focused on producing, while Kim Sung-jae prepared for his solo debut.
On November 19, 1995, Kim Sung-jae performed his solo debut song "As I Told You" (말하자면) on national television. The performance was widely praised, and many believed a successful solo career had just begun.
The following morning, he was found dead in his hotel room at the age of 23.
The investigation revealed the presence of the veterinary anesthetic Zoletil in his body. His girlfriend was charged with murder but was ultimately acquitted after a series of trials because the evidence was considered insufficient to support a conviction.
To this day, Kim Sung-jae's death remains one of the most widely discussed unsolved mysteries in Korean entertainment history.
Lee Hyun-do's Lasting Legacy
After DEUX, Lee Hyun-do continued working as a producer and songwriter, helping shape Korean popular music for another generation of artists.
Over the years, he collaborated with performers including Jinusean, Roo'ra, Lexy, and Rain, contributing to the evolution of Korean hip-hop and mainstream pop throughout the late 1990s and 2000s.
His influence can still be heard in the way Korean producers combine rap, melody, and rhythm today.
Why DEUX Still Matters
DEUX was more than a successful dance duo.
