About K-pedia

More than K-pop.
The Story of Korean Popular Music.

K-pedia is an independent English-language archive dedicated to the history, music, and culture of Korean popular music.

K-pop did not begin with the global idol boom. Behind today's international success lies a much longer history shaped by singers, songwriters, bands, producers, television, film, social change, and generations of listeners.

K-pedia was created to document and explain that history for readers beyond Korea.

More Than a K-pop Encyclopedia

Korean popular music is far more diverse than many people realize. Its history includes legendary ballad singers, rock musicians, dance artists, hip-hop and R&B performers, indie bands, soundtrack composers, producers, and many other musicians who helped shape the sounds that followed.

Rather than simply collecting artist profiles, discographies, or chart information, K-pedia focuses on the stories and context surrounding the music: how musical styles changed, why particular artists mattered, how the Korean music industry developed, and how music reflected the society around it.

A Korean Perspective

K-pedia is written and curated by a Korean writer and editor with more than a decade of professional writing experience.

Growing up with Korean popular music means remembering not only the songs themselves, but also how people encountered them: through television music programs, radio, cassette tapes, record stores, films, dramas, and the conversations surrounding them.

K-pedia combines that cultural perspective with research and historical sources to make the history of Korean popular music accessible to international readers. The aim is to preserve details and context that can easily disappear when Korean music history is reduced to a timeline of famous names and hit songs.

Why K-pedia Exists

Much of Korea's popular music history remains difficult to explore in English. Important artists, albums, television programs, soundtracks, and cultural moments may be well remembered or documented in Korea while receiving only brief coverage in English-language sources.

K-pedia aims to help bridge that gap. The goal is not simply to collect information, but to organize it into accessible stories that give international readers the historical and cultural context needed to understand Korean music more deeply.

Editorial Approach

K-pedia is independently researched, written, and curated. Articles are developed using available historical records, contemporary reporting, album information, broadcasts, interviews, official materials, and other relevant sources.

When historical accounts differ or information cannot be independently confirmed, K-pedia aims to avoid presenting uncertain claims as established fact. Articles may also be revised when better information or additional sources become available.

K-pedia is an independent editorial project and is not affiliated with the artists, entertainment companies, broadcasters, or other organizations featured on the site.

The Archive Continues

Korean popular music history is far larger than any single timeline or list of famous names.

K-pedia will continue expanding its archive—recovering overlooked stories, revisiting influential music, and documenting the connections between Korea's musical past and the culture that followed.
